Build an app to help the local food scene

Web Dev Challenge S1E5 Sep 18, 2024

What could you create if you had 30 minutes to plan and 4 hours to build? Maxi Ferreira, Natalie Davis, John Pham, and Jason Lengstorf took on the Web Dev Challenge to find out.

The Challenge

Make something that gets people excited about their local food scene. The way restaurants run changed in a big way during the pandemic. The big food delivery apps control which restaurants get seen, and social media algorithm changes make it harder than ever for these businesses to get noticed. Your challenge is to come up with some way of getting more people to notice — and get involved in — their local food scene.

This can be anything web-based, whether you want to create some way for people to discover new restaurants and chefs, create an event or a social game, or even tackle the notoriously awful restaurant website design aesthetic.

The Tools

Apps are encouraged to use one or more of the sponsors' tools in their build.

  • Clerk (https://go.clerk.com/5ABtiiV) is a drop-in auth solution that will make it very straightforward to add user accounts and protected areas to your app.
  • Convex (https://lwj.dev/convex) is a really interesting tool because it’s effectively a full back-end for apps, offering stuff like a database, real-time, scheduling, server functions, and a lot more.
  • Raycast (https://ray.so/lwj) is the “shortcut for everything”. It’s a launcher app (like spotlight search on macOS) that has extensions for… everything.
